Pioneer Hi-Bred International and the Iowa Chinese in Agriculture (ICIA) sponsored the visit of Hebei Executive Governor Fu Zhifang to Iowa on Aug. 24, 2009.

ICIA President Dr. Lang Deng spoke on behalf of the Chinese community of Central Iowa. Lang and ICIA Vice President Dr. Dong Zhanshan attended the reception for the Hebei Delegation by Iowa Sister States at Embassy Suites in downtown Des Moines.

A welcome dinner for the Hebei delegation was hosted by Holmes Auto, Pioneer and ICIA on the evening of Aug. 24, 2009. The principal hosts at the dinner were former Governor Ray and Mrs. Ray and former Lieutenant Governor Anderson. Governor Ray built the foundation for the Sister State relationship with Hebei Province back in 1982. Pioneer Latin America, Africa, and Asia Pacific Marketing Director Joe Neumann and Pioneer China joint venture General Manager Richard Zhou, and ICIA President Lang Deng also attended the welcome dinner.

As is tradition in China, Governor Fu’s toasted the attendees and said that from the airplane, he saw many forests and lakes in Iowa. Then Joe Neumann joked that what Fu saw “was not forest, but instead all the fields of Pioneer corn!”  At that, Fu said, “Sir, you told me two things: first, there is lots of Pioneer corn growing in Iowa. Second, I need to change my glasses.” Then he took off his glasses and shook hands with Joe.

Farmers have grown Pioneer seed in the Hebei Province since 2003. Today, farmers there grow approximately 2.5 million mu each year in the Hebei Province. Governor Fu told Joe Neumann, Richard Zhou and Lang Deng that Hebei needs much more Pioneer drought-resistant seeds in Hebei.

The delegation visited Iowa by the invitation of Iowa Governor Culver and Iowa Sister States.
