The Iowa Chinese in Agriculture (ICIA), a non-profit and volunteer-based 501(c)3 organization, was established in 2006. ICIA members consist of professionals in research, education, production, and business in agriculture across Iowa. ICIA’s mission is to provide a platform to serve our local communities and to organize Chinese culture related events/activities to improve member’s after-work life (and at-work life). ICIA also to foster a favorable environment for attracting, retaining, and motivating world  class agricultural professionals to work in Iowa.

ICIA 成功地组织、协调、并接待了以张来武副部长带领的中国科技部代表团对衣阿华州的访问

At the invitation of Iowa Governor Culver, ICIA and Pioneer, the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) led by Vice Minister Zhang Laiwu has visited Iowa July 8th and 9TH.  Vice Minister Zhang came to US as Chinese Chief Representative on US-China Agricultural Cooperation working group meeting with US undersecretary of Agriculture in Davis, CA.  He cut his talk short to come to Iowa with four of his staff: Mr. Jin Ju-Minister Counselor of Science and Technology; Mr. Jia Jingdun-Director General of Department of Agriculture at MOST; Mr. Yang Ru-Personal Assistant to Minister Zhang and Ms. Lu Jia-Program Officer of Department of International Cooperation at MOST. 

 

The delegation arrived at Des Moines in the evening of July 8th, met at the airport by Pioneer International Marketing Director Joe Neumann.  Then they had dinner with Pioneer Vice President Peter Hemken, Jeff Rowe, Director Trent Leopold, Joe Neumann, international operation coordinator Dasha Ternavska and ICIA President Lang Deng, Vice President Zhanshan Dong, Board member and former President Jijun Zou.

 

In the morning of July 9th, the Delegation visited Barrett and Sons Farm in Adel, Iowa, accompanied by Pioneer Director Joe Neumann, Pioneer China President David Liu, ICIA President Lang Deng, Vice President Zhanshan Dong, and Board Member Lingyu Zhang.  The visit was warmly welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Barrett. This is the first time the MOST officials saw a real American Farm!  They are so impressed. They asked questions about capital flow of the farm, seeding, harvesting, sale of grain, co-op and GMO issue.

The MOST delegation arrived at Pioneer at noon. Outside Carver, the delegation was received by DuPont Group Vice President James Borel, Pioneer President Paul Schickler, Vice President Bill Niebur and other Pioneer Executives (Jeff Rowe, Daniel Glat, Mike Lassner, etc.) as well as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey.   A luncheon in Carver 1B is hosted by President Schickler and Secretary Northey. ICIA board members were also at the luncheon: Lang Deng, Zhanshan Dong, Julie Qi, Deping Xu, Zuo-yu Zhao, Jijun Zou, and Lingyu Zhang. Paul introduced the Pioneer business in general and Pioneer business in China in particular. Bill Niebur presented about Pioneer research strength, Secretary Northey briefed about Iowa agriculture. Vice Minister Zhang thanked Pioneer for inviting and sponsoring [d1]  his visit, Secretary Northey for his hospitality, ICIA support and looking forward to having a long term cooperation between MOST and the State of Iowa, Pioneer and ICIA.  Then Paul and Vice Minster Zhang exchanged gifts.

After the luncheon, MOST delegates met with ICIA members in Carver for 30 minutes, answered some questions and took pictures together. Over 20 ICIA members met the delegation.

In the afternoon, MOST visited Pioneer FAST Corn facility at Johnston and Kernel Chipping and Molecular Marker labs at Dallas Center, escorted by Pioneer VP Mike Lassner, Sr Director Jon Lightner, Director Joe Neumann and Lingyu, Zhanshan and Lang from ICIA.  The delegation was so impressed by the Pioneer Technology.  ICIA member Dr. Gufu Li was the tour guide for FAST Corn facility.

 

In the early evening, Vice Minister Zhang and Director General Jia met with Secretary Northey of Iowa Agriculture and Deputy Secretary Carey for one hour. They discussed some cooperation possibilities and looked forward to a closer relationship between Iowa Agricultural Department and MOST.

 

In the evening, a formal reception at Embassy Club in downtown Des Moines was held, co-hosted by Iowa Governor Chet Culver, Pioneer President Paul Schickler and ICIA President Lang Deng, presided at by Joe Neumann, Pioneer international marketing director. Governor Culver, Vice Minister Zhang, ICIA President Lang Deng and Pioneer President Schickler all gave toast at the reception. Governor Culver presented a gift to Vice Minister Zhang; and Vice Minister Zhang presented gifts to Governor Culver and former Iowa Governor Ray.

 

Governor Culver gave a warm toast to welcome Vice Minister Zhang and his staff to Iowa.  Vice Minister Zhang responded with a very touching speech about being so warmly treated in Iowa by the Governor, Pioneer, Iowa community and business. ICIA President Lang Deng spoke and thanked Governor Culver and his office for inviting and hosting the delegation and Pioneer for sponsoring it.  Pioneer President Paul Shickler toasted for closer cooperation between MOST and Iowa government and business.

The reception lasted for three hours and was a great success, the delegation was very touched by the kindness and hospitality of Iowan!

 

The MOST visit has played a foundation for a future closer relationship between Iowa and China academia, businesses and associations.
